noomi: I am sexy for myself
When we met Noomi ‘in real life’ - after many months of messaging - for this interview, we felt her energy straight away. She got in front of the camera and she was in the zone. She felt so in tune with herself, full of confidence and she was just beautiful
We loved our conversation with Noomi as it’s so inspiring how she’s owning her sexuality. We are a lot who finds it hard because of all the norms the society has created and intimacy is so often connected to shame. We need to see more people like Noomi as it’s such an empowering feeling. Sexiness in an energy and we all have the power to embrace it. Thank you Noomi for inspiring us.
Make sure you follow Noomi on Instagram right here… and hopefully we’ll soon be able to see a profile which doesn’t have to worry about censoring .
Hi Noomi, could you start by telling our readers a bit about yourself?
My name is Noomi, yes that is my real name. I come from Faroe Islands and I preach body acceptance and sex positivity on my Instagram which I started doing in 2019. I started because I wanted to create artistic mainstream editorial photos but with a fat body which at that time you didn’t see very often. So I became my own photographer and just started doing my thing.
We love following you on IG as you share such empowering and sexy stuff. How did your IG journey start and what is your relationship to the platform?
It all started because I was so over the narrative surrounding the fat body and I noticed that most fat people I was following was doing fashion, and that is all good, but fat people were never in the centre of these beautiful vogue-ish editorial nude photos so I wanted to fill that gap with my Instagram. The sex positivity niche actually kinda found me. Brands started to approach me, the first one being Klubvenus (thank you Melissa) and I just decided to roll with it because I’ve always been very open about it anyway, so why not, right? It’s been successful and has made me feel even more empowered in owning my body. But Instagram is making it really hard for fat creators because we keep being banned for doing the exact same thing as thin people so it is definitely a battle but I enjoy making this content and working with different brands and creators, it brings me so much joy so I’m not gonna stop anytime soon.
There’s been a lot of talk about IG not being an equal and balanced platform when it comes to genders, bodies, sexuality and so many other things. What changes would you like to see within IG and social in general?
I want a platform that doesn’t discriminate. Where we aren’t being silenced and where we don’t have to censor ourselves. I am so done with the patriarchy and I’m so done with society’s standards of beauty. I want a platform that celebrates differences.
We love how open and honest you are when it comes to intimacy. Is this something you’ve always been? And why do you think it’s important?
I have always been very open about it since my first intimate experience (once again censoring) I have always had this fire inside me and I’ve always loved to provoke peoples minds. I’ve always preached good intimacy. Definitely had some weird looks from people on cafés, but they can look all they want it won’t stop being true or important.
Do you feel like the world around you accepts this openness?
My mom has always told me that I am “too much” in the best way possible of course. I don’t think she always understands, my family neither, but I think they just know me by now and it’s just a “of course, it’s Noomi, what did u expect” kind of situation. Nobody is going to censor me, nobody is going to tell me that I can’t do something, I will prove people wrong. I had a pretty rough childhood with years of sexual abuse and at some point when I got older that fire inside me started and I fought back. I haven’t stopped fighting since, even though it gets really hard at times, I never stop fighting for myself and my beliefs. I am a force to be reckoned with.
Have you had any difficult conversations with people around you because of this openness?
Definitely. I have had conversations with family members who has shown concern for this very public show I put on. I have even said goodbye to friends who didn’t understand. But in the end it’s my own choice what I do, and most people understand that around me, and those are the people I keep close, because they don’t try to make me smaller.
Do you relate to the story that the media tells about sexiness?
I think we are definitely going somewhere that is very inclusive and diverse, but we need more. We need to know that sexiness comes from within and can look however you want it to look.
What changes would you like to see in regards to this and how can we get there?
I think we just need to be more selfish. A lot of people still believe that your worth and your sexiness is measured by how men portray you, but this if obviously not true. So I think if we ask ourselves what WE actually want and need, and what makes US feel good, it will come from an empowered place within us and we will feel more powerful than ever.
What makes you feel sexy?
Me. My whole being. Knowing that I am strong and fierce. Experiencing new things. Passion. Being shameless.
And finally: what tip would you give to someone if they wanted to feel empowered to embrace their sexual energy but didn’t know how to / felt free enough to do it?
Just do it! Haha. I want to say that there is no shame in your sexuality or your sexual experiences or lack of. It’s never too late to empower yourself and there is nothing greater than owning up to who you are, what you want and how you want it.
Take small steps and discover yourself. I just got out of a 8 year relationship, so I myself have a lot of discovering to do and a lot of experiences to experience. We can do this, we are strong and capable and we are going to do this together.
Thank you Noomi for sharing your story and thoughts.
